Old Town Chinatown stretches from the river in the north part of downtown to Northwest Broadway and South to Burnside Street. This small section of downtown is known for great food, shopping, and a few condominiums.Relocating to Old Town Chinatown

Despite the name, most Chinese Americans and Chinese immigrants have moved out of the area by the time the city officially named it such. This is the original urban core of downtown Portland straddling W. Burnside St. and includes an area under the Burnside Bridge. Attractions include a vibrant Saturday market, the Shanghai tunnels, and Ankeny Square, the site of Portland's oldest public artwork. This is also the location of Portland's famous Voodoo Doughnuts, a popular hotspot for locals and visitors.

Naturally, Old Town Chinatown has a beautiful Chinatown entrance and offers commercial office space, popular nightclubs, bars, and restaurants. It's known for its Portland Saturday market and classical Chinese garden, Lan Su Garden and has some gorgeous old classical cast-iron buildings. The famous "Portland Oregon" sign is also located in this neighborhood rich in history right on the waterfront. It's popular with tourists and those seeking downtown Portland nightlife.

The famous Shanghai Tunnels Tour takes visitors and locals beneath the streets of Old Town showing the darker elements of Portland's past. This historical or haunted tour is available year-round.

Japantown is also located here. Prior to World War II, the area now known as Chinatown was Portland's Japantown were many Japanese immigrants were processed through Portland creating a demand for hotels, bath houses and restaurants. Businesses derived near the river and it was once home to more than 100 businesses and organs and largest Japantown.

Old Town Saturday Market is probably one of the most prominent landmarks obviously happening every Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM until about December 18 each year. You'll find local artists, crafts, one-of-a-kind gifts, produce, local meats and cheeses, and deliciously baked breads.

Because this is a major commercial hub there are limited residential properties in this area. 81% of residents rent their homes and with the median rent of about $800, it's a more affordable place in the downtown Portland area. However, what you will find are a few condominiums and apartments for sale with the median home value of about $470,000. Old Town Lofts are popular for folks that want to live, play, and work right in downtown with studio apartments starting at about $230,000.
